Backstory:
Moana was the only child of Chief Tui of Motunui and therefore destined to follow in his footsteps and become the next chief of her island. Despite her future being assured, she felt her true calling was elsewhere and found herse;f drawn to the ocean despite her father's reluctance to let her sail or for their people to ever leave the sanctuary of their island home. The one person who seemed to understand Moana was her grandmother, Tala, and encouraged her to find her own purpose and follow what she wanted in her heart rather than what was expected of her.
Her life would be changed forever when a blight came to her island caused by the demi-god, Maui, removing the Heart of Te Fiti centuries before. It was then that the true past of her people was revealed to her, that they were ancient explorers and masters of the sea. Her grandmother entrusted her with the Heart of Te Fiti (which she had found when she was only a toddler) and instructed her to find Maui and return the heart so that everything would be set right once more.
After many obstacles, such as finding Maui, learning how to sail in the tradtional way of her ancestors, and going to the underworld; they reached their goal. However, it was Moana and not Maui, who was the one to restore Te Fiti and save the world. After this she returned to her people to lead them as their new chief and bring back the tradition of sailing that had been long forgotten by them.
When the news of a distant war reached her people, Moana made a choice to go to these foreign lands and help. She left her father and some of her people back in their homeland and she sailed with those who were willing to join her into the cold lands of the north.
