Personality: Varian is a resourceful and clever boy with an innate brilliance when it comes to Alchemy and invention. He is innovative in the way he looks at the world, and though the outcomes are not always favorable, he usually works for the cause of helping others. He is emotional, sometimes to an unstable degree, and tends to feel things with a raw kind of intensity that can lead him to make rash decisions. He is a brilliant strategist, good at getting into the heads of those on the other side to predict what they intend to do, sometimes seeming to be one step ahead, other times tripping up and making mistakes that could have been avoided with better planning.
In the aftermath of the things he's done and the things he feels have been done to him, Varian has become less willing to trust blindly, less likely to rely on the promises of others, convinced that he cannot put his faith in anyone but himself. He is a boy who has suffered greatly, and made terrible choices in the wake of that suffering. The longer he reflects of the events that are behind him, the more he starts to see how much of it was actually his fault, and not the fault of those around him. He's a genuine person beneath the hurt, he only needs the right people around him to help him realize that.
Backstory: In the wake of his crimes against the crown, Frederic had kept true to his promise to attempt to treat Varian kindly. The boy, however, resisted these attempts to pacify him and heal the hurt he felt, and instead turned his sights on freedom, still feeling the desperate need to rectify what he'd done and free his father. He managed to escape from the castle, and the custody of the king and queen, and fled, pursued by the guards into the night with Rudiger, the raccoon, as his only companion.
When it became apparent that nothing in his arsenal seemed able to undo what had been done, he left, jaded and angry, at himself and the kingdom he now denounced. In the wake of leaving Corona, the home he'd known his entire life, Varian's path led him further along into Europe, and into the ranks of the Rogues. Varian feels no deep connection to them as of right now, no deep involvement to their cause, but for now he intends to lend his abilities where they're needed...Because as much as he would deny otherwise, this is preferable to being entirely alone.
