Backstory:
Kion (named Kiongozi at birth) was the second son of the previous King Simba and Queen Nala, born alongside his twin sister, Kiara. Because of him being second born, and Kiara being chosen as the heir, he would be the one to lead the Lion Guard after a generation of its absence since the generation of King Mufasa and the Usurper Scar.
Kion was a carefree cub who had friends beyond the pride's cubs and in other animals, but understood and respected the circle of life and the rules of the Pridelands. He loved his parents and his siblings greatly, and felt like he knew his place, sort of. That changed, however, when he finally gained the Roar of Elders while trying to save his friend, Bunga, and finally became the leader of the new Lion Guard.
It only took some time for Kion to learn the history of the Lion Guard from Rafiki and his father (who seemed a bit off for some reason, but he shrugged it off), and went about finding members for the Guard. However, it was not in lions but in other animals that he would find and name as members of the guard. Bunga became the Bravest, Ono became the Keenest of Sight, Fuli became the Fastest, and Beshte became the Strongest.
Simba was not pleased one bit, and told his son off for supposedly treating it as a game, and almost seemed to have this... mad flare in his eyes which made Kion scared. Kion, thought defeated, soon knew that he was right after talking to the spirit of Mufasa, and after saving Kiara from a gazelle stampede and roaring Janja and his clan of hyenas out, took his place in the great circle of life.
...Then the war finally came to the Pridelands. It all seemed to pass so fast that things went to hell in a handbasket. Many of the freedom fighters died while trying to kill Jafar, his father seemed to go mad and was killed, his mother being the one along with Jasper being the ones to plot his father's death, the ensuing but brief civil war tearing the Freedom Fighters apart, and everything else. It shattered the young cub's once innocent world and sent him into a depressed spiral.
Many of those who would follow the council of the newly formed Dawnseekers fled the Pridelands and the continent entirely, and taking up refuge in some place called Canada. This did not help Kion's mental state at the least, as he now missed home and nothing seemed to get him out of it, even when his friends or siblings tried. Over time, thankfully, he seemed to come out of it, though he wasn't the same as before, and he was still recovering from some self-inflicted wounds.
Only time can tell if things will change for the better or worse.

Notes: Kion still had the Roar of the Elders at his disposal, but he is hesitant to use it even more than before due to recent events. It is possible that he could have access to more magic beyond the Roar and being able to communicate with spirits on occasion, but until then, he's pretty ordinary.
