Personality:
Copper is a character of focus, and once he's set his mind to something he's likely to try and follow that goal through until the end. Being relatively young still, he does have a wild streak in him, and he loves to bounce around and play just like any pup would. When the situation calls for seriousness, however, he knows exactly when to drop the pupish attitude and get down to business. He likes direction and knowing precisely what it is he's supposed to be doing. Left to his own devices for too long can lead to some exciting outcomes depending on what it is he's trying to decide to do. That isn't to say he's indecisive, however, just tends to lose focus very quickly when left on his own. All in all, Copper is a friendly dog with a reasonably big heart, and even though he's been trained to be a hunting dog his entire life, he would still rather help those in need than turn them away.
Backstory:
Sold to Amos Slade when he was but six weeks old, Copper was taken to the man's home for the sole purpose of becoming a hunting dog. It didn't take long for the young pup to get used to his new surrounds(as well as his new 'look afterer,' Chief) and soon he was already going out and exploring just as any pup would in his new home. On one of these little expeditions, he met the fox kit Tod who happened to be owned by the old woman across the street. The two were fast friends, and it wasn't long before the two were getting into all kinds of trouble, trouble that included a run in with a group of performing dogs at a county fair. Sadly, as was their fate from the very beginning, Copper and Tod's friendship wasn't meant to last 'forever.'
After a terrible run-in with Chief that almost ended in Tod getting killed, Amos Slade loaded up his dogs to head out on his annual winter long hunting trip. Copper was sad to leave his friend behind, but he was excited to finally learn what it meant to be a real hunting dog. Copper took to training like a natural, and while there were a few blunders here and there, he learned fast and soon he was tracking even the most elusive of prey. Before Copper knew it, winter was over, and he was headed for home once more. The night after they got back Tod decided to pay his old friend a visit. Copper warned the fox that it was a bad idea for him to be there and that what they'd had was in the past. But Tod wouldn't listen, however, and eventually Chief woke up alerting Amos and before Copper could really comprehend what was happening he was being ordered to hunt down his old friend. Not wanting to see Tod get killed, Copper promised to let him go one time and led Amos in the opposite direction. It wasn't meant to be, however, as shortly after Tod was found by Chief and chased up onto some train tracks. A passing train hit Chief and severely injured him. Copper, blaming himself for the accident more than Tod, promised to hunt to fox down if it was the last thing he did.
In the coming days that was exactly what Copper did. What Copper didn't expect, however, was to come face to face with a huge black bear. Copper attacked the bear, hoping to protect his master whose foot had become stuck in a trap, but it soon became apparent that Copper was no match for the much larger animal and was quickly overpowered. Thankfully, it was Tod that came to Copper's rescue and after the whole ordeal was over Copper, in turn, repaid the favor by protecting Tod from Amos. The two parted ways on good terms, and while Copper was fairly certain, they'd never be the friends they once were he knew for a fact that they were no longer enemies.
Not long after, after Copper had returned home and things slowly went back to normal, news of a great war began to spread around. At first, Copper ignored it, after all, neither the master nor Chief had any interest in it so why should he? But, after a while, he heard more and more rumors, and it wasn't long before word that it could spread to where they were reached his ears. Not really wanting to remain sitting and doing nothing anymore, Copper snuck off one night after Amos, and Chief was sound asleep and decided to join up with the Freedom Fighters. After all, with Amos still somewhat outta commission with his foot, he didn't have anything else to do, and he was missing for some excitement.
