Backstory:
Nereus has no memories of her parents, nor of any possible siblings when she was born. She just remembers the craggy ground of the kelp forest and being entangled in the long kelp fronds before daring to swim out for the first time. It didn't ever really cross her mind back then. She had the instincts to survive, and anything else she could learn, so she lived.
Of course, she had her brushes with death and bigger creatures that sought to either turn her into dinner or in some other display of violence, but Nereus survived and ended up having a few scars to prove it. She fought violently with whatever came her way. Whether it be the animals of the kelp forest and around it like sharks, or the occasional other sentient creature that either lived there or came through like the very rare mermaid or merman. She never did encounter another of her kind, but that wasn't ever an issue.
Soon, there were the rumblings of something happening on the land above. It was within the talk of the animals and the other beings, which intriqued the young mer creature. But she could not walk on land to see, just stick her head out of the water to look. Nereus felt the need to sleep for a while, but she stuck it out enough, though she slept longer then usual. Soon, her tail began to split and grow out like a tadpole into a frog.
She was unsteady on her newfound legs, and soon found herself with the ability to breathe in fresh water and the air of the land and walk upon the ground. Though, she'd have to return to the water on occasion to re hydrate her skin. But the mer creature was positively giddy about it. It took a long time, but she soon found herself in some strange land. It was hot, and humid, and the animals unfamiliar, but it was fine.
Nereus then found one of the armies (the Blackblood Legion? What a weird name), and joined it. Who knew where this was going to go?
