Physical Description: While traveling and for intimidation, San is usually seen wearing a white cape with a hood and tail and red Oni mask that resembles a wolf. She also carries a spear and knife with her at all times for fighting. Upon her face are three red fang markings: one on each cheek and one on her forehead. Her ears and necklace are adorned with long fangs. Clothing wise, she wears an earth-toned dress with a simple white top over it. Her hair is roughly cut and falls above her ears. Unless you're an animal or a human that has proven themselves to her as a friend of the earth, expect scowls or a death glare.
Personality: San is a very sharp-eyed, well-built young woman. She considers herself more wolf than human but has recently let a bit more of her humanity seep into her. She's fiercely protective of the land and of the creatures that dwell within it. From being raised with wolves, she's faster and stronger than a normal young woman. She keeps up with her wolf brethren; she can scale rooftops and trees with ease. She also has the gift of animal tongues, although wolf is what she can understand best. Although friend to most living things, the grass, trees, rocks, and small stream included, that list does not include humans. San has seen the destruction and carelessness of them and cannot easily forgive them or stand to live among them because of what they have done to her land or family. Although she has made steps towards accepting part of her as human, she still much more identifies as a wolf. She still holds resentment and distrust towards humans, above all those humans who violate the land for greed.
Backstory: When she was just an infant, San's birth parents were confronted by Moro the wolf goddess for damaging the forest in her charge. To appease the great wolf, San's parents, quite literally, threw her to the wolves before running away. Moro took pity on the child, raising and loving her as much as she did her own two pups. Along with her wolf brethren, San became infamous as a forest spirit, more often resembling a wolf than a human. She takes her duties as a forest guardian rather seriously. Protecting her home and the animals within it and removing any threat to that is her top priority. As Iron Town encroached upon her forest for iron ore, San, along with her wolf brothers, made attempts to assassinate Lady Eboshi, thinking it would bring an end to the town's expansion.
During one of these such assassination attempts, San met Ashitaka, a wandering outsider who was trying to find a cure from a curse upon his arm. Forest spirits were getting corrupted by iron ball weapons from Iron Town, turning them into demons. One such infected boar spirit had harmed Ashitaka, poisoning his arm and soon his entire body. At first hostile towards the fellow human, San eventually warmed up to Ashitaka who proved himself a friend of the forest.
San and the wolves weren't the only spirits who were getting discontent with Iron Town. The boar clan wanted to save the forest it so loved too. They attempted to wage war upon the human settlement. They attempted but failed miserably. An iron ball corrupted their leader, Okkoto, who ran rampant in the forest. Lady Eboshi and greedy opportunist Jingo used this opportunity to follow Okkoto, with the latter and his men under the guise of fellow boars. For if Okkoto led them to the Great Forest Spirit, they could decapitate its head which, according to legend, granted immortality.
While trying to stop the rampaging boar leader, San got swept up in the oozes of corruption that had started leaking out of the once great boar. Ashitaka dove in to save her and, after resurfacing, helped her recuperate much like she had helped him before. Finally, Lady Eboshi and Jiro found the Great Spirit as it awoke from its sacred ground. While it transformed into its night form, Lady Eboshi decapitated it. It bled into the land, killing everything it touched as it searched in vain for its head.
San and Ashitaka searched for the head as it switched from Lady Eboshi to Jiro. They caught up with him, and after taking back the head, returned it to the Great Spirit. Appeased, the Great Spirit washes over the land, healing it. Despite her affection for Ashitaka, San declined to join the town. Instead, she returned to the forest, ready to defend it should the town overstep its bounds again.
Not long after, she got word of the Blackblood's destruction over other, far away lands. Although Ichi and Nii were hesitant to let her go, she was determined to help the forests afflicted with human activity. Besides, her brothers had to continue looking after what their mother had left. The forest still needed protecting and a watchful eye in case the town got too greedy again. After much discussion, her brothers finally relented, charging another wolf-guardian to aid her.
Hageshi, a lesser wolf guardian, and San rode off to lands unknown. Protecting the scorched and desecrated lands are their only concern. They are not interested in petty politics or alliances or wars. They here to protect the forests, the seas, the deserts, and the trees, or any being in nature that cries out in corruption. San has seen first hand what humans can do. What waste they can lay to the land. They see the land as disposable, forgettable. But humans have forgotten that there will always be defenders of what was there before them.
So, until the land is respected once again, San and Hageshi will travel as far and as long as they need to, abiding by no one but themselves and the spirit of the land.
